Learning the Italian language and obtaining a broad overview of the Italian culture has given me a stronger sense of my Italian heritage.”.

Katie Madic, a senior at South High School, serves as Head Girl of Girls’ Cabinet. She has been a member of the Pepperette Dance Team for four years and served as choreographer for three years. In addition to Italian Honor Society, Katie is a member of National Honor Society, Newman Club and Environmental Club. She participates in concurrent enrollment at Colorado State University-Pueblo. Mollie Schloss is a senior at Central High School who serves as editor of the yearbook while being involved in Student Council, Italian Club, and Girls’ Cabinet. She also enjoys performing in drama department productions. Mollie founded and leads a club that is unique to Central High School—Branch Out—a club whose mission is to make sure every student feels like they are someone at Central High School. Mollie writes, “As a student who is interested in pursuing Italian during college, this scholarship would allow me to pursue a passion of mine further.

Brianna Reyes is a student at Colorado State University-Pueblo. She hopes to study abroad in Italy next year. Brianna is majoring in Business Management with minors in Italian and Honors. Brianna writes, “Studying abroad in Italy is something I’ve always dreamed of doing, it is almost surreal that I have the opportunity to pursue it. There are no words to describe how blessed I feel, and I know taking on this journey will enable me to enhance my future career goals and skills. I believe this trip will cultivate my learning, as well as introduce me to international business opportunities. I am thrilled to expand not only my educational outlook on things, but also to discover new cultures. To embark on this journey is like nothing I’ve ever known before, I am very thankful to be a recipient of the Dante Alighieri Scholarship.”.

COLLEGE STUDENTS

Dante Alighieri Scholarships are available for Colorado State University – Pueblo students. Awards are given on a competitive basis. Declared Italian minors are given preference for short-term, month-long, or semester study in Italy. Students who are interested in minoring in Italian should discuss this with the program director, Dr. Chris Picicci.

All students will be required to submit a Dante Alighieri of Pueblo scholarship application, a short essay on why the scholarship will be beneficial, and two letters of recommendation. Funds are currently available for 2019. If a student has been selected to receive a scholarship, s/he will be notified by letter. Once selected, a student will receive details about the disbursement of the scholarship award.

Scholarships will be assigned to students in good standing and are based on academic merit. Students are encouraged to apply for other monetary awards in order to help cover an overseas study in Italy. In the past, students have received scholarships from outside organizations like The Sons of Italy.

HIGH SCHOOl STUDENTS

The Dante Alighieri Society of Pueblo has awarded scholarships to high school seniors since 1980. We continue the tradition by awarding $1000 scholarships to students from each area high school that offers studies in Italian. In order to be eligible for a scholarship, students must have completed two or more years of Italian in high school with a 3.5 GPA in Italian and a 3.0 GPA overall.

Students who wish to apply should provide an official transcript and two letters of recommendation including a letter from their Italian teacher. The application should include a statement explaining how the scholarship would be meaningful to the student. Successful applicants are required to attend the annual scholarship luncheon on the first Sunday in May.

In order to receive the $1000 award, students must successfully complete two semesters of Italian at an accredited university within four years of receiving the scholarship. The Italian courses must be completed following high school graduation. Concurrent enrollment courses do not fulfill this requirement.

Recipients of the scholarships are chosen on the basis of their academic achievement. There is no consideration given to gender, race, creed, or national origin of any candidate. Please refer to the scholarship application for specific details and contact information.
